Hi all :). I'm sure everyone has heard by now that Elliot has graced us with his presence earlier than planned. I wanted to share the story here. Also with him in the NICU, I'll be updating everyone on how he's doing on the blog.
So on Monday, I followed up with my OB and handed in my urine for another 24 hr urine eval. My blood pressure readings at home had been great while on bedrest. They had been running 120s-130s/80-90s for the most part. However when I went in to see Dr. Dutreil, it was the highest it's been. The first reading was somewhere around 170/115. They did my nonstress test in hopes that by lying still for 20-30 minutes, it would get better. When they retook it, it was 210/124. He couldn't believe how high it was, especially considering I had no symptoms and my home readings had been great. We brought in my monitor and took my bp to see if maybe there was something wrong with my machine. It also registered high. He sent me to labor and delivery to be monitored again. I could tell right away we were a little more serious than last time. They actually admitted me this time and he also wanted me to get started on an IV. My bps were still high.
When my doc came up there to see me, he was really unsure about what we should do (as was I). I had no symptoms...I was 32 weeks pregnant...I had gotten the betamethasone to help mature baby's lungs. In the end, he decided that we couldn't take the chance of something severe happening-from placental abruption to a stroke. As they put me in a labor and delivery room and started getting things prepped for the induction, he got my urine protein results: 349. Anything greater than 300 + high blood pressure is considered preeclampsia. So we were sure at that point that we made the right decision.
The first med I was given through IV was hydralazine. It's a fast acting high blood pressure med. I got quite a few doses of this. Next, I was given penicillin. Normally around 35 weeks, pregnant women are tested to see if they have Group B Strep. Without having this done, they gave me antibiotics just in case. Next, I was started on magnesium sulfate. This was rough! This is given with preeclampsia during the whole labor/delivery and 24 hrs after to prevent seizures. While receiving it, I was on bed rest and had to have a catheter the entire time. Also, they had to draw my blood every 6 hours to make sure the magnesium level in my blood wasn't too high.
To start the induction, they gave me cytotec-just as I got with Isaac. It's a pill inserted vaginally and then they check me 4 hours later to see if I was dilated. I got 3 rounds of this and got up to 2 cm. My doc was hoping for more so we then had to do a bulb foley (same as with Isaac)-its a little balloon that's inserted and puts pressure on the cervix to dilate. They also started pitocin at this point. Not long after, I got the epidural. After waiting a few hours, they checked to see if it had to be adjusted...the bulb came out which meant I was now 3-4 cm. With 6 cm left to go, they told me an estimated one hour per cm to go.
A few hours later, the doctor came to check me and was surprised to see that baby was ready to come out. NOW. haha. Doc's face was pretty funny. They prepped and within10-15 minutes and 2 pushes, Elliot was out. We were happy to hear him crying, which meant his lungs were working. His apgar scores were 9 and 9, which is perfect. We got a quick pic before the NICU staff whisked him away.
I then had to wait until I was off the magnesium to go visit him. That was hard, especially when other people were going to see him. Elliot has been doing great in the NICU so far...I will make a whole separate post about the NICU experience and will keep ya'll updated. People have been asking about exactly what happened...so here it is :).
My blood pressure is now normal while on my regular medication. I am following up with my OB next week for blood pressure and then again in 6 weeks for postpartum checkup. Physically, I am feeling great other than a very sore back which I'm attributing to bedrest and a very uncomfortable hospital bed. I'm so glad to be out of the fog that is the magnesium sulfate. I'm now focusing on getting my breastmilk supply up for my baby boy. As I said before, check the blog regularly for updates on Elliot's progress.
Thank you so much for all the kind thoughts and prayers, as well as for everyone who helped us through this process. With him in the NICU, we're continuing to get great support. Thank you :)

Bedrest Update
Just wanted to update everyone since my last bed rest post. After five days on bed rest last time, I was able to return to work. My labs were good and blood pressures were stable. This past week I saw the dr. on Monday for my 32 week checkup. He told me I had some protein in my urine...and my blood pressure readings were running higher again. I did my first nonstress test, which was normal. And then he made me stay home the next day for another 24 hour urine. He told me that I can go to work on Wednesday but that they would call with the results - if there was protein in that urine, then I would be put on bed rest for good.
I felt fine at work the next day then went in to do my ultrasound. Baby Elliot is looking great. He weighs about 4 lbs 7oz and is measuring 32-33 weeks. My fluid is good and he is a wiggly little boy. However, my blood pressure readings were 160-170's/112-117. Super high! They were very concerned. When they checked the 24 hour urine, they told me that the protein was right under the "pre eclampsia diagnosis" mark, but I also didn't give them as much urine as they would have thought. So, if I would have...the protein would probably hit the mark. My dr. had me go to labor and delivery to get my blood pressure routinely monitored for hours.
While there, the blood pressures were originally high and then made their way back down after adding a new bp med to my regimen. I'll now be taking another med twice a day. He let me go home on bed rest and wants to buy some time to let baby cook :). I have gotten two shots of betamethasone...this is a steroid given in situations like this in case baby has to come early. It helps to mature the lungs. It appears that Elliot will most likely be coming early, but after these shots and if we can buy a couple more weeks, all should be fine. I think more than anything at this point, is the high bp effect on me.
Since I've been home, my bps have been good. Surprisingly, they tend to be higher when I'm sitting home alone. Apparently boredom stresses me out. haha. I've started my online Christmas shopping and have been patiently learning to lay back and not take control of things. This is my biggest challenge, but Andrew is doing a great job taking over the reins :). Isaac has been so good about everything. He has become my little helper, and is actually spending the weekend with Tat and Omi right now. I miss him, but I know he's having fun.
We are blessed to have family and friends helping us during this difficult time- with Isaac, or cooking food, or keeping me company. Thank you for that. I'll be doing regular updates on here from now on while I can :). From now on I'll be seeing my dr. twice and week and doing nonstress tests. I'll also be doing weekly 24 hour urines to test for protein. My next appt is Monday so wish me luck!

Bedrest :(
Hi everyone! You may have heard by now but on Wednesday I got placed on bed rest. For now, it's at least until I see the dr. on Monday. Hopefully I'll be able to work after that. On Wednesday, I felt really flushed all day-just very hot and I had a headache, nausea, and seriously swollen feet. I usually don't have any symptoms when my blood pressure is high but decided to have a nurse check it out anyway. And it was high. The highest we got was 147/109 and the lowest it got (after sitting in the dark, staying still, and turning the lights off) was 142/102. I have seen numbers higher than that but I knew that I had taken my meds and it shouldn't be that high. What also concerned me was that I had actual symptoms.
I decided to call Dr. Dutreil's office (my OB), who then told me that I needed to do bed rest. My next check up was originally set for Wednesday but since I have a cardiology follow up on Monday, we moved it to Monday as well. I'm guessing his hopes are that taking it easy for a few days will lower my bp. I've been doing my best following doctor's orders, and I've been routinely monitoring my blood pressure. It runs a little high in the morning (right after I take my meds). After that, it's been really good. No swelling in the feet and no symptoms.
I guess if I have to do bed rest, this is a good weekend to do it (hoping that it'll only be a weekend). Isaac is going camping with Nanny and Poppy until Sunday afternoon. I'm really sad about it, but it works out. In the meantime, I guess I'll just be watching Netflix and trying to come up with a baby name. I'll also be going through baby's 0-3 month clothes collection to see if there's anything else that I'll need. I've been blessed with tons of hand me downs (including Isaac's), so I'm sure he'll be covered.
Please send prayers our way in hopes that the check up goes well and I'll be able to return to work! And I leave you with a pic of my bed rest buddy...

"Still pregnant?"
Yes, I'm still pregnant. I'm not even late so technically I can't even evict him yet! I had my second exam today and I am still not dilated, but I am a little effaced (your cervix gets thinned out as you get closer to labor, which is necessary for dilation). Baby still hasn't dropped into the birth canal yet. How frustrating! I know it means nothing...it doesn't mean that my water can't break anytime. But we need to see some progress to have a successful induction, if that's necessary. Soooo, they're having me go in again on Monday or Tuesday. If I'm 3 cm or more than they'll schedule the induction next week. If I'm still only 0-2 cm, then they're going to wait to induce until the next week (that I'm due.) Hopefully in that case, I'll have him naturally before then. My mom will be here on Monday, so it looks like she'll make it for the birth.
As for me, I'm actually feeling pretty good. Quite a bit of discomfort and pain but not to the point where I can't walk or anything. I'm sleeping a little better...it's hard. My mind is racing more than anything. We have everything set up around the house that we'll need...just a little more cleaning to do. And mentally...well, I'm just trying to think positively and be patient. I know that God has a plan for us and Baby Isaac will be here when he's ready. I can't help it if I have a cozy uterus =)

Progress?
Nope, not yet. We had a dr. appointment today and I had my first internal exam. On a side note, it was not as bad as I was planning. Anyway, no dilation yet. In fact, he hasn't even dropped yet. It's still early though so I'm not worried. I'm hoping that by next week's visit I'll be 1-2 cm. It's just a game at this point. The thing is that my blood pressure is going up a little bit now, which means that they may have to induce (which was expected) before things get dangerous. But they don't want to induce if I have no progress on my own...that will most likely result in a c-section and I really REALLY don't want one. I'm terrified of getting a c-section. I know they're safe and all but it's just a personal preference. Of course, if there is any danger to the baby I'll do what I have to do. That being said, I don't want to progress too fast because I want him to wait for my mom to get here.
*sigh* This is one stubborn little baby...I'll tell you that much. But it's still early. Progression at this point really means nothing. A woman can walk around stuck at 3 cm for 2 weeks, where as another woman may go from 0-4 cm in a day. So, hopefully he'll come on his own but not too soon. In the meantime, I'll be patient and continue to get my 3-4 hours/sleep a night =)
PS-I find it so weird to talk about my progress with someone I'm not close to. And if you're ready this, then we're close so it's cool. HAHA. It's just weird. Like, "so...how is your vagina doing today?" "It's all good...and yours?" Like we're talking about the weather or something!

36 Week Picture
Yay!! So I'm officially 36 weeks. One more week and I'll be considered full term. I'm actually ok with my weight gain. I made a goal, and I didn't exceed it =). From here on out, I shouldn't be gaining anything. I guess I should lay off the ice cream, brownies, and Panda Express. And so far, no stretch marks! *KNOCKS ON WOOD* I can't see the bottom of my belly but Andrew swears there are none. And if he's lying to me...well, he's a smart man. HAHA. Hope everyone had a good Labor Day despite Hurricane Gustav and I hope everyone stayed safe!

Baby Shower!
I was so blessed to get another baby shower today! Our ohana here in Hawaii threw me a surprise shower...hosted by my friend Jolee. We had a great time playing games and eating good food. We also got tons of clothes for baby Isaac! God has blessed our family with such great friends during our time here in Hawaii.
Our gifts. And that little man in the middle is a diaper cake sent from our friend Cheryl in Chicago!

This weekend
So Andrew and I had a great weekend. Normally, I'm tired and we end up just sitting around the house and I clean too much. This time we decided to get out. On Friday, I found a good use for my belly...it works great as a table. Especially for a bowl of ice cream! I did end up crying 4 times on Friday though. Why you ask?? 1. The Dog Whisperer 2. Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood (their dog died and they had a memorial) 3. A maternity photographer's website 4. Change. I'm scared. But other than that, it was relaxing! HAHA. On Saturday, we went to Ewa Beach. We both got in the water and had fun. That night we went to California Pizza Kitchen for our date. Now, I was super excited about this and let me tell you why...I decided that I wanted to feel sexy. It's hard to feel sexy when you can't really see your feet and you waddle a little. It's also hard to feel sexy in elastic waistbands!! So I remembered that a friend had given me a size 10 jeans to use as transition jeans...to my surprise, they fit!!! Of course, I had to wear them under my belly but they buttoned up and everything! And my top was also non maternity. I felt sexy =). So what if Andrew had to buckle my shoes and if my fingers looked like sausages because they were swollen? I felt sexy and that's all that counts =)

This is only a test...
Baby Isaac at 34 weeks 2 days-his hand is next to his check making it look super chubby =)
Now if the readings don't come out good, or if his heartbeat is not good enough, I am sent for a biophysical profile (bpp). A bpp is basically an ultrasound, but it looks for specific movements by baby. He is then scored for each thing and he has 30 min. to do this. So far, I have had to get a bpp once a week because his heartbeat won't get up high enough during the NST. Some of the things they look for-small movements (like sucking), breathing, large movements, tone, etc. So far, he has passed his bpp's. They told me that everything is fine...but that he's just sleepy in the morning and doesn't like to move. If the bpp is not passed, I would have to go to L&D for further monitoring.
So far, that's 2 NSTs a week and possibly 2 bpps. Now, once a week after my NST I have to get a fluid check. This is basically another ultrasound but they measure the pockets of fluid around baby. We've gotten some cute pics by doing these. They are looking for the fluid to be between 5-25 cm. And they use about 3 places and then take an average. So far, mine have been great. My last one was 16.8.
Aside from these visits, I have a growth scan every 4 weeks (starting at 32 weeks). My next one is next week. And hopefully will be my last. This is basically another ultrasound and they measure all his body parts and organs to make sure that he is growing accurately. Again, this is done due to me being high risk.
I also go to the dr. every 2 weeks. Starting next week, it'll be every week. They triage me, check the heartbeat, measure my fundal height. For those that don't know what that is...the body is such a cool thing. By taking a tape measure and measure from the top of my pubic bone to the top of my uterus (in cm), it should be equal to the amount of weeks that I'm pregnant. (At this point it's +/- 4 weeks due to the baby's position). And then they basically see if I have questions. Every now and again I have to do a specific test. Next week, I have to test for Strep B.
So, that's about it. Interesting, eh? So at this point, I am always at the hospital. On a good note, gas prices just dropped to $4.25 =)

34 Weeks
So, I made 34 weeks yesterday. That means I'm big and my belly button is really shallow. This is what my insides look like:
Is anyone else freaked out by that picture?? I am. And see that organ right under the head that's not labeled? Yeah, that's my bladder. And baby Isaac is head down already which means his noggin is directly on my bladder at all times. So here's what is going on at 34 weeks (according to pregnancy.com and i-am-pregnant.com):Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 lbs (like your average canteloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. His fat layers are filling him out, making him rounder. His skin is almost smoother than ever. His central nervouse system is maturing and his lungs are continuing to mature as well. You'll be happy to know that babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no health problems generally do fine. Baby's hair continues to grow longer and thicker. Your baby is also taking calcium from you to lay down lots of bone. Be sure to continue to take your prenatal vitamins and to drink milk. The baby now rests on your uterus and is no longer floating. Fingernails now reach over the fingertips and he can now scratch himself.
By this week, fatigue has probably set in again though maybe not the same coma-like intensity as the first trimester. Your tiredness is perfectly understandable, given the physical strain you're under and the restless nights of frequent pee breaks and tossing and turning, while trying to get comfortable. Now's the time to slow down and save up energy for labor day (and beyond). If you've been sitting or lying down for a long time, don't jump up too quickly. Blood can pool in your feet and legs, causing a temporary drop in your blood pressure when you get up that can make you feel dizzy.
5-6 more weeks to go!! =)

Pregnancy etiquette
Ok, I love being pregnant. But there are definitely some things that I didn't know about it...one being all the stupid/ridiculous questions or comments that people will throw at you. You see, I really think that other people just feel the need to say something to a pregnant woman so they say anything...and I do mean ANYTHING. I know they mean well...so I just try to stay calm. But really, no need to get all up in my business. In honor of my baby boy being almost here, here are some statements/questions that you should never say or ask a pregnant woman unless you're already close to the person and talk about personal things. So, these are not intended for ya'll not to ask me or anything. It's just a chance for me to get some things off my chest. I just find it extremely rude when someone that I barely know will come up and ask me if I'm getting an epidural. Here you go =)
- Was it planned? Yeah, I'm serious. People that I am not close to have asked me this question. Ok, you're basically asking me about my sex life.
- Go ahead and eat it, you're eating for two now! Ok, no I'm not. I'm eating for me and someone the size of a fruit. And did I mention that I have a BS in dietetics?
- Should you be eating/drinking that? Are you kidding me?! Shut up. Now. My body. My baby. Again, would you ever say that to someone who wasn't pregnant??
- You look like you're about to pop!/Are you due like next week? Ok, that's not how babies are born. I'm not gonna pop...ever. I'm gonna shove him out of my vagina. And you don't need to guess my due date. If you're curious, just ask.
- Judgement on decisions ex. breastfeeding, epidural, induction, circumsicion, etc. They are just that. Our decisions. We didn't make these lightly, and I educate myself on every decision that I make. If you don't agree, I really don't care. Nor do I need to explain myself.
- Any comment about body size Do I even need to explain myself? No.
- Acting like I'm baby illiterate This is THE ULTIMATE WORST. Just because I'm not a mom yet, doesn't mean that I'm baby stupid. However, I am no expert and I am very open to advice. In fact, I am constantly calling people to ask them things that I don't know...or to get their opinion. I don't need to hear things like, "Get sleep now because when the baby comes...you won't sleep!" Well, DUH! If I could sleep, I would. I've been around babies before. In fact, I have 2 younger brothers. No need to tell me that babies don't sleep through the night. REALLY?? That's news to me. And no need to tell me how breastfeeding is good for my baby. Thanks. Again, did I mention that I have a BS in dietetics?? Oh yeah, and don't tell me that it's impossible to breastfeed for for 6 months because you couldn't. Let me live my own life...everyone is different. No need to be smug.
I promised myself awhile ago that I won't be one of those moms that pushes unwanted advice or ask rude qustions to people I don't know. I just think that maybe other people out there didn't get that memo. But for you people that I know and love...go ahead and ask away! You know I'm all about talking TMI. HAHA. Love you all!

Body Language
Ok, here is a little video of Isaac going crazy. I've been trying to get this on video and I finally did! He likes to move a lot at night but tonight I guess he decided to get the party started a little earlier. You can see a little movement around :09 and then majorly starting at :31. Boring I know...but I love to watch it =) Poor thing really doesn't have much space to move around anymore...so I guess I forgive him for messing about in my ribs. I read in my book that his feet can get lodged in there and to get on all fours and arch my back to "dislodge" them. That freaks me out. Plus, me on all fours right now just should not be happening. HAHA...enjoy.
PS-The background noise is Andrew playing some war xbox 360 game. And excuse my Darth Vader breathing...I'm big, ok?

32 Week Picture
Wow! I can't believe it's already been 32 weeks. Time is flying by. We are doing well. I am no longer working, but I am starting to get highly uncomfortable. The heartburn is incredibly painful at night. Yesterday I went in for a growth scan and I have to do that again in 4 weeks. They measured all his body parts again. He's an average sized baby and weighs about 4 lb 4 oz right now. It is so funny because we were looking at all his body parts and he kept wanting to show his boy parts! haha. We also went on our labor and delivery tour which was pretty informative. On Thursday I start my first nonstress test and then I have to go twice a week after that. I basically lay there with monitors on me. So yeah, confused by all the appts? Me too. Not to mention going to the regular doctor every two weeks. I have that on Thursday as well. Told ya it was confusing. Anyways, enjoy the pics...and please excuse my face...I was tired.

Dear Baby Isaac,
I'm sorry that I'm drinking a McDonald's Iced Coffee. It is sugar free though. As if you hadn't noticed, we're kind of sharing a body right now. So when you only allow me to sleep for 4 hours, I must resort to drastic measures such as these in order to work an 8 hour shift. Mommy can't hang like she used to. And she gets horrible allergies if she doesn't sleep (hence the reason why you keep getting jerked around...that's a SNEEZE!) See, my uterus is not a bouncy house. Especially not at 3 am. During the day, bounce away. When I'm not working anymore, you can stay up all night and bounce and then I will sleep all day. But PLEASE help me for the next week or so. I do still love you though...and will continue to give you chocolate chip cookies because I know you like them so much. That's why I eat them. For you =) I love you and can't wait to meet you!!

30 Weeks and Baby Isaac in 3D!!
Ok, so we got the 3D ultrasound today! It was awesome to get to see our little one, but I was a little disappointed. His face was smooshed up against the placenta the whole time! So it was foggy looking. And when he did back up a little, he had his legs criss crossed over his head and his feet on his forehead (which you can see in the pics). He did stick his tongue out for us and he was sucking on something...I think it was his toes. hehe...it was cute. He's measuring ok...his head is measuring for a 34 week old! I can thank Andrew for that. He thinks it's funny but when I'm pushing that head out, we'll see who's laughing. Here's a hint: NOT HIM. Overall, all his measurements indicate that I am 32 weeks along, so not far off. It just means, once again that he is big. He has a little hair, but not too much. Which is a suprise to me. I know you can't really tell, but we got to see some features. He has Andrew's mom's nose =) and Andrew's lips and head. Andrew said that he has my feet because he saw a big gap between the big toe and the other toes. HAHA...he's not happy about that. =) He weights about 3lbs 10oz. right now. Anyways, enjoy the pics.
As for how I'm doing, pretty good. I'm tired. And uncomfortable. I can't see my own crotch. I know, that's WAY too much information. I can reach and see my feet but it's not comfortable to do my own nails...I might make Andrew later. HAHA. I can't believe we're in the homestretch. Only 10 more weeks to go! This week I went to the dr. and all is well. Starting week 32 I might as well move in the hospital though because I have to go every 2 weeks like normal AND twice a week for ultrasound and monitoring because of my high bp. blah. At least I won't be working anymore. That's right folks...my last day is August 2 and I have to say that it is not my decision. But hey, EVERYTHING happens for a reason. Love to all!

Our Babymoon
What is a babymoon, you ask? Well..."the books" say that mom and dad should take a trip before baby comes so that they can bond. Plus it was a good chance for us to go to Maui =). We had a really good time relaxing, going to beaches, and travelling the Road to Hana. This road is only about 30 something miles but takes about 4 hours because it's really windy and you stop along the way to go hiking and go to beaches. It was gorgeous! I'm so glad that we were able to go because it was a great time for Andrew and I to spend some alone time together. Check out the pictures!
PS-Check out the last pic for a hint at the name we have chosen...well, pretty sure. 98% sure. Ok, maybe 99. I'm just too indecisive to say 100% =)

Welcome Third Trimester!
Ok, so I'm officialy into the last trimester...at least I think. haha. I swear, it's really confusing! A pregnancy calender is not the same as a normal people calender. And don't even ask me what month I'm on! Which I think is 7 by the way...So, as quickly as time has gone by, I must say that it has slowed down. The weeks in the 20's went by slowly. I can't wait to get to week 30 because I know that I'll only have 9 more weeks to go at the most! I don't have to worry about being late. I was told by my dr. that because of my hypertension, that I will be induced on my 39th week if I don't have him by then. My bp is still fine, but it's protocol to do that.
So, moving to the 3rd trimester everyone is asking me how I feel...well here you go. I'm terrified of labor and delivery. I know I'm strong and billions of women have done it, but I'm SCARED. I'm also super excited and impatient about meeting our little one. I can't wait to see who he's gonna look like, if he's gonna have hair (I'm sure he will!), etc. I'm also a little nervous about being a mom. I have these fears of not knowing what to do with him. My mom keeps telling me that I'll know but still...
Physically, all is well. My belly is getting harder. I thought I wanted that but I take it back. HAHA. One second I feel like I can run a marathon (ok, maybe not THAT good) and then the next I think I might die of exhaustion. I'm always hungry but I'm trying to keep it in check. I can barely sleep. I swear, I'm waiting for Andrew to grab a pillow and go on the sofa because I can never get comfortable and he gets so aggravated! I also lost my mind...I'll be on the phone and looking for it at the same time. Seriously. I'm also pretty stressed out. About what is to come, about change, about my job. All of it. Just trying to relax and take it easy. And did I mention that I'm constantly getting kicked from the inside?? It's cute really...it started hurting a little when he kicks in the ribs, but other than that it's just a little distracting. I'll be with a client and I can see my belly jump! I love it though.
I'm hanging in there. I'm happy, and I'm super busy with all these baby classes. We should be making the appt for the 4D ultrasound soon :)
PS-Did I mention how hot it is?? Yeah, it's hot. I mean IT'S HOT. For any person yes. But try lugging around say...10? or more extra lbs! (Ok, now you KNOW I'm heavier than that but let's just pretend.)
